Due to the pandemic, over the past few years school assemblies have not been occurring as they had previously. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of some CUSD #205 staff members, students in grades 8, 9, and 10th were able to participate in an assembly on October 26th with presenter Ethan Fisher that may have an everlasting impact on them.
Ethan Fisher is a keynote speaker and mental health advocate that has presented to over one million students in the United States. Ethan describes to audiences his own life story to illustrate the devastating consequences of mental health stigma and substance abuse. Fisher went into great detail about the exact moments in his life that changed him forever.
Ethan visited CUSD #205 in between visits to Monmouth College and Sauk Valley Community College. He also presented to district coaches and other staff about how to recognize and assist students that may be struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues.
Our students offered Ethan great feedback after his assembly. One student at Churchill said, “I thought your assembly would be boring, but you did amazing and opened my eyes on some scary things”.
Ethan’s visit to CUSD #205 was made possible through a collaboration among SEL in #205, Principal Hawkins at Galesburg High School and Principal Young at Churchill Junior High School.
